Home remedies to relieve sore eyes.

How to relieve sore and burning eyes using items from your kitchen or garden.

Home remedies to relieve sore eyes.

Most of us know the feeling when, for whatever reason, our eyes feel painful, sore and burning as if they are on fire. Sore eyes are fairly common and can be caused through lack of sleep, eye strain or as a result of being in a smoky atmosphere.
Look on any chemist shelf and various creams, sprays and drops can be found to ease the pain of sore eyes. However why use hard earned money to buy such products when everyday items, which can be equally affective and less costly, can be found in the kitchen or garden?

Firstly, cold used wet tea bags (particularly chamomile) can be placed on the closed eyes and you will instantly feel a cooling sensation. After approximately 30 minutes remove the tea bags and the burning sensation and soreness will have disappeared.

If you don’t drink tea then a very good alternative is to take a cucumber and place a slice on each eye. The cucumber gives the most amazing cooling feeling and instantly removes any soreness. Rather than waste the remains of the cucumber it can be used in a sandwich (I believe the Queen of England likes cucumber sandwiches) or it can be peeled and blended to make a face mask.

The gel from leaf of the Aloe Vera plant is also very affective. All that is required is to take a leaf from the plant, remove the green skin from one side of the leaf revealing the gel. The gel part of the leaf is then placed over the closed eyes. The gel of the Aloe Vera plant has a very soothing affect and will take away any burning sensations. The Aloe Vera plant has multiple uses, for example it can also be used to ease and heal burns or it can be peeled, blended and used as a face mask, hair conditioner or drink.

Remedies I haven’t tried but have read about are placing grated apple or potato over sore eyes, dipping cotton wool in cows milk and then onto the closed eye or boiling coriander leaves in water, strain and use the liquid to bathe the eye.

As a word of warning if sore eyes continue then it is advisable to consult a doctor or optician as they eye may be infected.

liver spots

A homemade and inexpensive remedy to lighten Lentiigo senilis commonly known as Liver or Old Age spots.

How to Lighten Liver /Age Spots Using a Homemade Remedy

Lentiigo senilis commonly known old age spots, liver spots or old age freckle are those light brown to red or black regular shaped marks which appear on our skin as we enter our later years. They are also associated with exposure to the sun, particularly in people who have fair skin. The spots are not harmful although any concerns regarding skin cancer should be checked out and not left.
Personally I have noticed that during the past year I have developed several of these spots on my hands and legs and whilst I am not particularly bothered by them I wondered whether there is any way to lighten the darker spots by using a homemade remedy.
Living in Spain we grow Aloe Vera and I am a great believer in the benefits of this versatile plant. The gel from the Aloe Vera plant is well known for easing the pain of burns whilst also assisting in the healing process. This soothing gel can also be used for numerous other ailments such as eczema, psoriasis and yes liver spots.
A month ago I decided to blend the gel from several Aloe Vera leaves and stored the juice in an airtight container in the refrigerator. Every morning I dabbed my brown liver spots with the gel and hey presto they are much lighter and now can hardly been seen.
If you live in a climate where it is not possible to grow Aloe Vera plants then Aloe Vera gel can be purchased  at

Lets make bread

Once a week I make a loaf of bread. Its easy and tastes much better than bread bought at the shops.

This is a simple recipe and works for me every time.

500 gms plain flour
1 teaspoon yeast. I use fresh but dried is okay
1 teaspoon sugar
325 ml warm water
1 tablespoon oil. I use olive oil
a pinch of salt

Put the yeast in the warm water and leave it for 5 minutes
Put the flour, sugar, oil, water and yeast in  mixing bowl I use a mixer with a dough hook but you can mix by hand.

Bring all the ingredients together making sure that the flour is fully blended.
If making by hand take the dough out of the bowl and knead for ten minutes. If using a dough hook leave the machine running for 4 minutes.
Once kneaded form into a ball shape and place back into the bowl. Cover with a damp cloth and leave in a warm place until the dough has doubled in size.
Take the dough out of the bowl and punch the dough down.
Put in on a baking tray in the shape that you want the bread to be or put in a bread tin. Leave again to rise covered with a damp cloth.
When the bread is risen put it in a pre heated hot oven for approximately twenty minutes.
Tom make sure the bread is cooked inside turn the bread upside down and tap the bottom it should sound hollow.
Once cooked place the bread on a cooling tray otherwise the bottom of the bread will become wet.
Enjoy
