Museums to visit in London


Introduction

The UK is home to over two thousand museums and some of the finest are found in central London. The majority of museums in the UK are free to enter although a charge may be made for special exhibits. Most museums are wheelchair accessible and family friendly using modern technology and activities to engage children. The museums tend to be open from 10am to 17.50pm all year with the exception of the Christmas period.

Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum is housed in an impressive building which resembles a cathedral, located near to South Kensington Tube station. To assist visitors the interior of the museum is colour coded with areas such as the Wildlife, Dinosaur and Planet Earth. The museum has over seventy million items relating to nature and of particular interest are the dinosaur and blue whale section, forty million year old spider, insect exhibits and aquarium. This museum is very popular with children and attracts large numbers of visitors throughout the year therefore to ensure that all areas of interest are covered it is best to plan any visit.

The British Museum

The British Museum is a large building located near to Holborn, Russell Square and Goodge Street Tube stations. The focus of the museum is human history covering cultures from all over the world. Of particular interest are the reading room, the Rosetta Stone from ancient Egypt, the Elgin Marbles and the Egyptian sculptures and drawings by Michelangelo, Botticelli and Raphael.

Victoria and Albert Museum

The Victoria and Albert Museum is located near to South Kensington Tube station. Founded in 1852 the museum houses over four million items relating to arts and design which are displayed in one hundred and forty five galleries. Exploration of the museum shows items dating from five thousand years ago to present day including a large collection of post classical sculpture and Italian Renaissance items.

Science Museum

The Science Museum is situated next to the Natural History Museum not far from South Kensington Tube station. The interior of the museum is spread over seven floors and houses over three hundred thousand items relating to technology and science. The museum is a particular favourite with children offering touch screen pads, IMAX cinema, atmosphere gallery, exploring space and many more exhibits to educate and entertain.

Grant Museum

Located near to Warren Street Tube station this museum is open daily 1pm to 5pm. The museum displays over sixty thousand animal specimens some of which are endangered or extinct including the remains of the Dodo and Tasmanian tiger.

London Transport Museum

The London transport museum is located near to Covent Garden Tube station. The museum charges an entry fee. The museum has an impressive display of vehicles, photographs posters, uniforms, tickets, tokens and signs which tell the story of London transport from its origins to present day.


London is the home to a wide range of impressive museums which are mostly free and house some magnificent exhibits and use modern technology to educate and entertain visitors.
