Must See in Greenwich
Greenwich is located in South London in Southern England. The popular area has maintained a village quality, housing many small independent shops and a large indoor market. Sitting on the River Thames, Greenwich can be accessed by ferry, docklands light railway, train or bus from central London. Visitors to Greenwich can spend a day or more exploring the many places of interest, spend time in the large park and enjoy a meal or beverage in one of the restaurants or atmospheric public houses.
Cutty Sark
Within walking distance of the centre of Greenwich and housed alongside the River Thames sits the very impressive and newly restored two hundred and eighty foot long tea clipper ship the Cutty Sark. Built in 1869 by Scott and Linton in Dumbarton Scotland this magnificent ship is now a museum which tells the story of the ships crews and its many voyagers.
Queens House and National Maritime Museum
The Queens House was built in the 1600’s for Anne of Denmark wife to James l. During its later life it became a residence for the Greenwich Park Ranger and in 1806 a school for orphans. Since 1937 Queens House has been open to the public becoming part of the National Maritime Museum. A meander through the house and its magnificent rooms show fine furnishing and portraits providing insight into the lives of its former residents.
The National Maritime Museum
This interesting museum provides its visitors with an in-depth history of the British at sea with exhibitions showing sea vessels, navigational equipment, charts, maps, coins, medals, uniforms and weapons to name a few. Entry to the museum is free and it provides hands on activities to engage children.
Greenwich Park
Greenwich Park is set behind Queens House and provides approximately seventy three hectares of parkland containing formal gardens, deer park, play area, boating lake, cafe and historic sites. On a large grassy hill in the park visitors can enjoy impressive views of London and also visit the Greenwich Mean Time and the Royal Observatory where visitors can see the planetarium, the Harrison timekeepers and refracting telescope.
Greenwich is a lovely place to visit for a day or longer and the above are only some of the attractions that it offers.
